Grey three-tab shingle

Many homeowners start to research getting a total roof replacement by looking at products. There are many different roofing materials on the market; from shingles to metal to slate, and more. One thing that homeowners have likely come across is different types of shingles. Typically, these are architectural shingles and 3-tab shingles.

But all shingles are created equal, right?

Not really! There are differences between architectural shingles and 3-tabs that all homeowners should be aware of before signing the dotted line. Continue reading to read the features of each type of asphalt shingle.

What are the Features of 3-tab Shingles?

Three-tab shingles are one of the most common roofing materials that you will find on the market today. They are an inexpensive roofing material that can withstand wind and heat and are easy to install. Three-tab shingles lay flat on the roof and have a notched pattern. They come in several different shingle colors, so it is easy for homeowners to find the perfect shingle to match their exterior paint choices.

  • Composition

  • Three-tab shingles start with a fiberglass mat. From there, asphalt, adhesive, and granules are added. The granules are there to help prevent UV rays from breaking down the roof.

  • Lifespan

  • A standard three-tab shingle roof will last around 20 years. This is provided that the installation meets the manufacturer's standards and there is no extreme weather damage to the roofing system.

  • Warranty

  • Shanco uses GAF shingles for our roof replacement and repair projects. Their roof shingles carry a warranty that depends on the scope of your roof systems. You can read more about the roofing material warranty provided by GAF here.

  • Cost

  • Three-tab shingles offer a great roofing product at a great price. When compared to other shingles and roofing materials, three-tab shingles provide a quick installation process which also keeps the price down.

  • Wind Resistance

  • Three-tab shingles are lighter than their architectural counterpart. Because it’s lighter, three tabs have lower wind resistance. You can expect three tabs to withstand wind speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

  • Maintenance

  • Maintaining a shingled roof has two requirements; the first is regular roof inspections from a trusted roofing company. The second is keeping it clean and free of debris and leaves.

What are the Features of Architectural Shingles?

Architectural roof shingles are also known as dimensional shingles. They are an asphalt shingle for homeowners looking for a more sophisticated roofing option. Architectural shingles can replicate different roofing materials; such as slate and wood shakes.

  • Composition

  • Architectural shingles weigh about 50% more than their three-tab counterparts. The reason that they are heavier is that they are thicker and have smaller, more densely packed shingle granules.

  • Lifespan

  • The increased size of architectural shingles and additional granules give them a longer lifespan on the roof of your home. They will last around 30 years before requiring replacement. However, this is under proper installation requirements being met and optimal weather conditions.

  • Warranty

  • Cost

  • Architectural shingles will cost more to install for several reasons. First, they are a bigger and heavier product that will require increased time to install. Secondly, they have more materials involved in their production than their three-tab counterparts.

  • Wind Resistance

  • Architectural shingles are sturdy and with their increased weight comes an increase in wind resistance. They can handle up to 120 mph.

  • Maintenance

  • Architectural shingles have the same maintenance as a standard shingle roof. Have regular roof inspections conducted and keep it free from debris and leaves.
