Are you considering making the switch to solar for your home? One of the first decisions you may have to make is whether you want to install solar panels or solar shingles. Not sure what the difference is? That’s where our solar roofing company can help.
For over 20 years, Shanco has been handling all types of roofing projects, including residential solar projects. In fact, we’ve earned the status of a GAF-certified Green Roofer! Additionally, we are a GAF Master Elite Contractor, EPA Lead Safe-certified firm, and a BBB A+ rated solar shingle company.
That said, we can teach you about the differences between panels and shingles and help with your solar shingle installation.
What Are Shingled Solar Panels?
Shingled solar panels function much in the same way that standard solar panels do. The difference lies in how they are made. Shingled panels are cut into strips that are overlaid like standard roof shingles. This leaves no gaps between the solar cells or between the shingles and the roof system itself.
What is the Difference Between Solar Shingles and Solar Panels?
Solar panels are separate panels that are installed on your existing roof system with brackets. They harness solar energy to power your home through a series of photovoltaic cells that are arranged on each panel. These panels must be connected to one another and positioned to capture the most sunlight.
Solar shingles, on the other hand, are installed as a part of the roof and look similar to traditional roofing materials. This makes them a better choice in terms of aesthetics and longevity. However, they are a bit more expensive.
Common FAQs About Solar Shingles
1. Can I Add Solar Shingles to a New Roof System?
Yes, you can add solar shingles to a new roof. In fact, it is recommended to consider installing a solar roofing system if you’re already going to install a new roof. This is because you’ll be able to maximize the effectiveness of solar power and reduce the need for future repairs and maintenance.
2. How is the GAF Timberline Solar™ Shingle Different from the Tesla Roof?
Both GAF Timberline Solar™ shingles and Tesla roof systems are built to provide a greener energy alternative for property owners. The difference between the two lies in the installation process.
Timberline Solar™ roofing systems install much like traditional roof shingles, requiring the same amount of time and energy as a normal roof system would. This system is comprised of standard shingles and solar shingles and is protected by a 25-year warranty that covers both the roof and the solar product.
Tesla roof systems are comprised entirely of Tesla tiles and are more difficult to install, which means the process will take longer, too. Tesla’s warranty protection is also different. They offer a 10-year roof leak and workmanship warranty as well as a 25-year panel warranty.
3. Can I Use Solar Tax Credits with GAF Solar Shingles?
Yes! According to GAF Energy, there is a federal Investment Tax Credit that allows homeowners who have installed a roof-integrated solar system in 2020 to be eligible for a 26% credit against taxes owed. This percentage has been reduced year-over-year, but still offers amazing benefits for property owners.
4. Can I Add Solar Shingles if I Just Replaced My Roof?
No, installing GAF Timberline Solar™ shingles will require you to replace your roof instead of retrofitting your existing one.
