What to immediately do when you have a roof leak

There are few worse feelings than discovering a leak. A leaky roof is a serious issue that only gets worse the longer it goes unnoticed. Water damage can cause significant issues, headaches, and cost thousands of dollars in repairs. However, the sooner you discover a leak, the sooner you can deal with it. There are a variety of steps you can take once you notice a leak to stop any further water damage and save your roof.

Clear the area and contain the leak- If you notice a leak, the first thing you should do is try to stop and contain it. Water can cause a ton of damage, and not just to your home. Electronics, furniture, and other valuables are all susceptible. The instant you notice a leak, get everything important out of the way. Unplug electronics, cover furniture with tarps, and generally clear the area. Once it’s clear, get buckets and towels and try your best to contain the water.

Take care of the area- Once you’ve contained the leak, it’s time to dry out the area. While water may not be currently dripping from the ceiling, moisture can still be there. Residual moisture can cause mold, mildew, or other issues.  Drying out the area with fans and dehumidifiers can help mitigate that potential damage. Additionally, leaks can do more than damage your roof and belongings, residual splashes can cause lasting damage to hardwood floors. It’s critical that you get that water taken care of as soon as possible.

Call your roofer- While your roof might look fine from the outside, there may be serious internal damage. It’s key that you call a roofing company immediately for a roof inspection. Most roofing companies have emergency contact numbers so you can call them the instant you notice an issue. A professional roofing company can accurately assess the damage, and save you time and money.
